OK, I admit it: I listen to the kids’ music even when they’re not in the car with me.
Today I was headed to town by myself, blasting “High School Musical 2” and singing in that loud and obnoxious way you do when you’re alone. By the time Track 5 started though, it occurred to me that perhaps it’s not totally normal to listen to the kids’ music when they’re not even in the vicinity, but hey — sometimes a girl’s just got to sing!
(In case you’re not familiar with the “High School Musical 2″ soundtrack, the best songs on it are “I Don’t Dance” and “Bet On It.” My kids agree — these two are the most requested tracks when we have that particular CD in the player.)
In the past, I’ve also been known to pop in “Wee Sing Silly Songs,” a cassette tape (remember those?) we had when the kids were much younger, and, yes, of course, sing along. Now that my kids have them all on CD, I also like to listen to the set of kids’ records (I know, I’m showing my age) my sisters and I grew up on. The most popular of them was “Music Machine,” versions 1 and 2. These CDs, despite the lack of needle scratching and skipping, just feel like home to me because we constantly had one or another of them on.
Just don’t laugh if you pass me on the road while I’m rocking out to “Work This Out.” When you’re forced to listen to the kids’ music as often as a lot of us parents are (“Hannah Montana,” anyone?), you can’t help having it grow on you a bit, particularly when you’re still a kid at heart anyway.
Anyone else willing to confess? What kiddie CDs are your guilty pleasures?

Oh, yeah. HSM (Bet on it), Miley (Old Blue Jeans, True Friend, etc.), JoBros (Burnin Up). They’ve all graced my playlist. Nothing to be ashamed of, right?
Nope, nothing to be ashamed of. I listen to JoBros a lot too as my oldest daughter is absolutely IN LOOOOVE with them. =)
I asked for HSM 2 soundtrack for Christmas, so it’s mine! I’ve asked for HSM for my birthday, I’m guessing I’ll get it.
I’ve listened to my share of Raffi-two CD’s which were mine before I had children, but I did use them in my classroom when I was teaching.
We also love the soundtrack to Annie.
Now my children are starting to like some of our Alternative 80′s (Depeche Mode, Erasure, OMD) and so sometimes I have to take the other stuff out so they can listen to the “grown up” stuff!
I totally agree that those are the best tracks on HSM2. But can we also agree that HSM1 was WAY better than 2?
Last night, Boy #3 had his final gymnastics class and they invited parents to watch. The music was all HSM — and I had a hard time not singing along!
Love that you love Music Machine too. I thought I was the only one who remembered that one.
I don’t know, Jenny — perhaps it’s just overexposure to HSM2, but I’m not a big fan of HSM1. <> I really like “Breaking Free” and “Getcha’ Head in the Game,” but I guess I just haven’t heard that soundtrack very often.
I can’t believe you’re a Music Machine vet too! Besides my brother-in-law, you’re the only person on the planet that I’ve ever met, outside my family, who has heard it! Very cool.
Oh, yes, the soundtrack to “Annie” is great too! So is the soundtrack to “The Sound of Music.”
My kids like a lot of the music I like too, but we compromise — sometimes we listen to my stuff and sometimes to theirs. One of my very favorite songs, “Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse, has been a kid favorite for the past couple years too.
